Unique Places to Stay

Mellow Ventures’ Outpost

A Floating Retreat in the Heart of Key West – 711 Eisenhower Dr, Key West, FL 33040

Unique Places to Stay in Key West

There are lots of good options for overnighting in Key West, but not many are special. For a truly unique Key West experience, consider staying aboard Mellow Ventures’ Outpost—a repurposed old Florida cottage anchored on the water. My friend Rob rebuilt this floating retreat to accommodate up to four guests, offering a serene escape with panoramic views of the surrounding seascape. Guests are transported to the houseboat at the beginning of their stay and returned to shore upon departure.

Mellow Ventures Key West

During your stay, you can launch kayaks and paddleboards directly from your private deck, exploring the calm waters and nearby mangroves at your leisure. This off-the-beaten-path accommodation provides an intimate connection with Key West’s marine environment, making it an ideal choice for visitors looking to immerse themselves in the island’s natural splendor.

While the outpost looks like a cottage, it’s also a legit boat, and you can charter it to take you into the backcountry for overnight stays, which just happens to be one of my favorite spots to spend the night. Absolutely incredible experience and hard to find. Soon there will be two outposts, but no matter what, jump on it and book it before someone else does.

Hidden Gems of Key West: Evening Entertainment

The Gardens Hotel Jazz Night

Live Jazz Under the Stars – 526 Angela St, Key West, FL 33040

If you’re looking for a touch of elegance and soul in Key West, the Gardens Hotel Jazz Night is an experience worth savoring. Held every Sunday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (seasonal, typically from October to May), this event brings together talented local and visiting musicians in a lush garden setting. The historic hotel’s outdoor patio becomes a cozy venue where jazz fills the air, complemented by flickering lanterns and the hum of conversation.

I don’t make it every week, but when I do, it always feels like a special treat—perfect for winding down the weekend with a drink from the bar and soaking in the ambiance. It’s low-key, friendly, and quintessentially Key West. If you’re in town, don’t miss this chance to experience live music in one of the island’s most beautiful settings. Check the Gardens Hotel website or call ahead to confirm the schedule, especially if you’re visiting during the off-season.

Hugh’s Views

Panoramic Key West from Above – 533 Eaton St, Key West, FL 33040

Hugh’s Views, perched atop The Studios of Key West, offers one of the best spots to take in the beauty of the island. This rooftop gem isn’t your typical tourist attraction—it’s a laid-back space with seating, open air, and unbeatable views of the island’s historic charm and turquoise waters.

I’ve always appreciated its vibe—it feels like a secret you stumbled upon. Whether you’re there for a special event, a sunset drink during one of their hosted evenings, or just to take a quiet moment to soak it all in, Hugh’s Views is a spot that showcases Key West’s understated magic. Check The Studios of Key West’s calendar for open rooftop nights or other happenings to make the most of your visit.

Hidden Gem Restaurants in Key West

Fantastic Food with authentic flavors, nothing corporate or polished with these harder to find spots, and the food is delicious made by the owners themselves.

Mo’s Restaurant

Caribbean (Haitian) Restaurant at 1116 White Street, Key West

Hidden Gem Restaurants in Key West

Do not miss Mo’s!

Having first arrived in Key West in 2005, one of the few things that has not changed is Mo’s Restaurant. A common theme for me is enjoying authenticity and that is what you come to this restaurant for. The service is friendly, but at their pace, as they make you some of the most delicious flavors that you can’t find elsewhere.

To start don’t miss the french onion soup which is ridiculously good, and the baked cheddar is jammed with flavor. A simple spinach salad with Mo’s mix dressing gets you ready for the main dish of goat (I ask him to make mine spicy) or go for the snapper or grouper dish.

If you enjoy some spice, then you absolutely have to ask for Pickliz, it is a spicy cabbage and scotch bonnet slaw that is my favorite condiment ever. I buy it by the mason jar, it’s $15 but it’s money well spent, and if you are in town for a while, then you might want to do the same. It makes every dish special.

Mo and his family work the location six days a week and they are closed on Sunday. There is local and caribbean art for sale on the wall, and the TV could have soccer, or maybe even WWE on. Sometimes Mo will even pick up his guitar and play a little, but mostly it is there for him during the down times. I’m telling you, this place is the real deal!

This restaurant is at the top of “old town” so there is street parking to be found fairly easily. You may have to walk a half block or so, you may even see our Bahama blue Honest Eco car because we live nearby!

Mam’s Best Food

A Kosher restaurant at 405 Petronia (in between Duval and Whitehead)

I love this lady. I feel like I’m at her house when I go there. The food is great and I would say the menu is typical of a small jewish restaurant, which may not be unique to Key West, but “Mam” and the location are! The falafel is great, the hummus is great and the location is great. Tucked away between two busy locations, Mam’s is a reprieve from the buzz of Duval and Whitehead streets. Definitely plan to walk or bike here because parking is virtually nonexistent in this area.

Olives Mediterranean

730 Emma Street

This spot is brand new at the end of 2024, but the two times I’ve been here I’ve been really impressed and happy I stopped by. It’s tiny with only two or three tables inside, but that is part of the charm.

I am a huge fan of good baba ganoush and this spot has it. The hummus and grape leaves were also delicious. My son and I split a combo platter and it was the right move for us to get to try lots of things. I also had a turkish coffee which is a fun change from my normal french presses and espressos.

My views on the quality of this restaurant are backed up by friend’s who have gone too.

Yahman’s Jamaican

Jamaican Jerk shack at 2510 N Roosevelt Blvd

The best Jerk anything I’ve ever had. You can eat in or carry out, but I highly recommend stopping here at least once while you are in town. The last time I went I got one dish for now and one to go for later. I was first introduced to Mark (the owner and chef) and his cooking 10 years ago when he would grill jerk chicken for some local event we would have out on Stock Island, the next island up from Key West. Back then everything was underground and you would get a plate of food and give a donation kind of deal. It was insane how good it was and even though I have spent some time in Jamaica I never had food like that when I was there. Mark got such great feedback that he pretty much was forced by the community into starting a food truck, and now he has moved into a small space in the middle of Key West. I’m telling you we are lucky to have him cooking for us and I hope he keeps growing and gets another spot even closer to me.

Can’t go wrong on what you order, the portions are big but I’d say order a couple things so that you can try it all. Obviously the Jerk Chicken is safe start and must try.
